Falcon 9 Set to Launch Starlink Group 17-28 on June 21
Everything you need to know about the upcoming SpaceX Falcon 9 launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base, targeting Sunday, June 21, 2026.
SpaceX is gearing up for another Starlink launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base, and residents across California's Central Coast will have a front-row seat to the action. The mission, designated Starlink Group 17-28, is scheduled to lift off no earlier than Sunday, June 21, 2026, with a launch window opening at 8:12 AM PT and extending through 11:00 AM PT.
Flying on a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket, the mission will carry a batch of 24 satellites destined for low Earth orbit, where they will join SpaceX's ever-growing Starlink mega-constellation. Starlink is SpaceX's ambitious project to build a space-based internet communication system, designed to deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband coverage to users around the globe — including in remote and underserved areas where traditional internet infrastructure simply doesn't reach. Each new launch adds to a network that already serves millions of customers worldwide, and this mission represents another significant step in expanding that capability.
The rocket will lift off from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg, the same pad that has hosted dozens of SpaceX missions over the years. The Falcon 9 Block 5, SpaceX's workhorse orbital vehicle, is renowned for its reusability — the first stage booster is designed to land itself after separation, dramatically reducing the cost of reaching orbit. Whether the booster attempts a landing at the nearby Landing Zone 4 or downrange on one of SpaceX's drone ships at sea, that secondary spectacle often rivals the launch itself for sheer drama.
For Central Coast residents, a morning Starlink launch is one of the more stunning sights the region has to offer. The Falcon 9's engines ignite with a brilliant flash, and the rocket arcs out over the Pacific in a smooth, graceful climb. Under the right conditions, the engine plume catches the sunlight at high altitude, creating a glowing, expanding cloud that can be seen for hundreds of miles. Viewers across the entire 805 region should have an excellent opportunity to witness the spectacle firsthand.
If you're planning to watch, head to an open area with a clear view of the western horizon. For the best local viewing spots, visit 805.life/launches/where-to-watch to find locations near you. Mark your calendar for Sunday, June 21, 2026, and keep an eye on the clock as 8:12 AM approaches.
