SpaceX Falcon 9 Successfully Launches Starlink Group 17-22
Recap of the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base on Sunday, April 19, 2026. Mission successful.
SpaceX successfully launched another batch of Starlink satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base on Sunday morning, adding 25 more internet-beaming spacecraft to the company's ever-expanding orbital constellation. The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Space Launch Complex 4E at precisely 7:14 AM Pacific Time, painting a brilliant streak across the pre-dawn sky above California's Central Coast.
Residents throughout the region witnessed the spectacular ascent as the rocket's nine Merlin engines propelled the vehicle through the marine layer and into the clear skies above. The launch proceeded flawlessly through all major mission milestones, with stage separation occurring approximately two and a half minutes after liftoff. The first stage booster, making its eighth flight, executed a perfect landing on the autonomous spaceport drone ship stationed in the Pacific Ocean.
This mission, designated Starlink Group 17-22, represents SpaceX's continued effort to build out its massive satellite internet network. The 25 satellites deployed Sunday will join thousands of others already in low Earth orbit, working together to provide high-speed internet coverage to underserved areas across the globe. Each satellite weighs approximately 570 pounds and features advanced phased-array antennas and ion propulsion systems for precise orbital positioning.
The Falcon 9's upper stage successfully delivered the satellite payload to their target orbit roughly 15 minutes after launch. Mission controllers at SpaceX's Hawthorne headquarters confirmed all 25 satellites deployed as planned and began their automated sequences to reach their operational altitudes. Over the coming weeks, each spacecraft will use its onboard thrusters to maneuver into its designated orbital slot within the Starlink constellation.
Sunday's launch marks another milestone in SpaceX's ambitious goal of creating a global broadband network accessible from virtually anywhere on Earth. The company has now deployed over 8,000 Starlink satellites since the program began, with plans to eventually operate tens of thousands of spacecraft.
Local space enthusiasts won't have to wait long for the next opportunity to witness a launch from Vandenberg. SpaceX has tentatively scheduled another Falcon 9 mission for early May, pending final preparations and weather conditions. The upcoming launch will carry a classified payload for the National Reconnaissance Office, promising another spectacular display along the Central Coast.
