Run for City Council – Filing Opens

Ventura residents considering a run for local office are facing a narrow window to make their campaigns official. The nomination period for the city's Nov. 3, 2026, General Municipal Election is officially open, giving prospective leaders a matter of weeks to file the necessary paperwork to appear on the ballot.

Voters will head to the polls this autumn to elect City Council members representing Districts 1, 4, 5, and 6. The election marks a continuing phase in Ventura's by-district representation, shifting the political focus to specific geographic areas of the 805 region.

According to the Ventura Breeze, the nomination period initially opened on July 13. The final deadline to submit paperwork is rapidly approaching on Friday, Aug. 7. The city clerk's office must receive all relevant documents by 5 p.m. that day.

District Seats Up for Grabs

This election cycle centers on four of Ventura's distinct districts. Local residents will have the opportunity to choose representatives for Districts 1, 4, 5, and 6.

To be eligible for office, candidates must meet a specific set of criteria established by the city. Prospective council members must be residents of the City of Ventura, registered voters, and officially eligible to vote in the specific district they intend to represent.

Because Ventura operates under a district-based electoral map, candidates must live within the boundaries of the district they are seeking to represent, ensuring that neighborhood-specific concerns remain a focal point of local governance.

How to File and Upcoming Deadlines

Pulling nomination papers is not a walk-in process. The City Clerk’s Office requires prospective candidates to schedule a formal appointment to receive and complete their filing documents.

Appointments take roughly one hour to process and can be arranged by calling 805-658-4787 or emailing [email protected]. Officials note that because City Hall normally operates on an alternating Friday closure schedule, the building will be closed to the general public on the final filing day of Aug. 7. However, the City Clerk’s Office will remain accessible strictly by appointment on that date to accommodate last-minute candidate filings.

There is one crucial exception to the standard filing timeline. If an eligible incumbent in any of the four open districts fails to file their nomination papers by the Aug. 7 deadline, the filing window for that specific district will be extended. In that scenario, non-incumbent candidates will have until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, to submit their paperwork.

The City Clerk’s Office hosted a Candidate Information Session on July 13 in the City Council Chambers. The presentation was designed to walk potential candidates through the logistics of a political campaign, covering the nomination process step-by-step, mandatory filing requirements, key election deadlines, and the rules surrounding campaign finance. While attendance was optional, the city highly encouraged prospective candidates to participate to ensure they comply with local and state election regulations.

Ventura's transition to a district-based electoral system fundamentally changed how city council members are chosen, moving away from a system where the entire city voted on all candidates, to one where voters select a representative for their specific geographic area.
