Live coverage: SpaceX to launch 24 Starlink satellites on Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg SFB

Central Coast launch watchers, take note: SpaceX is targeting Friday night for its next Starlink mission out of Vandenberg Space Force Base. According to Spaceflight Now, liftoff from Space Launch Complex 4 East is scheduled for 8:08 p.m. PDT.

That timing is notable for the 805 community. A Friday evening launch window means tens of thousands of Central Coast residents from Santa Maria down to San Luis Obispo and the Santa Ynez Valley could step outside and catch the Falcon 9's exhaust plume lighting up the twilight sky — one of the signature spectacles of living near the base.

A Booster With an Impressive Resume

The first stage doing the heavy lifting, B1081, is no stranger to the pad. Spaceflight Now reported this will be the booster's 26th flight, an extraordinary milestone even by SpaceX's increasingly ambitious reuse standards.

B1081 has had a remarkable career so far. Its manifest includes some of the highest-profile missions in recent years: NASA's SpaceX Crew-7 in August 2023, the CRS-29 cargo resupply flight to the International Space Station in November 2023, and the PACE Earth-observation satellite launch in February 2024. The booster has also carried rideshare missions (Transporter-10 and Transporter-13), national security payloads for the NRO, and satellites for the European Space Agency and the Italian space program.

After pushing the 24 Starlink satellites toward orbit, B1081 will make its way back toward the Pacific Ocean. Roughly eight minutes after liftoff, the booster is slated to touch down on the droneship Of Course I Still Love You. If the landing succeeds, it will mark the 214th recovery on that vessel, Spaceflight Now noted.

Why Friday and Not Monday?

The launch was originally planned for Monday, July 27, but faced multiple delays pushing it four days into the week. SpaceX did not publicly explain the reasons for the repeated postponements, a posture consistent with the company's typical approach to launch scheduling.

For local launch chasers who track road closures and base-access updates, those shifting timelines can be frustrating — but also part of the routine. Vandenberg missions are dictated by orbital mechanics, weather windows, range safety, and technical readiness, and schedules often shift by hours or days. The Starlink 17-52 mission, as this batch is designated, is another reminder that flexibility comes with the territory on the Central Coast launch calendar.

Starlink Build-Out Continues at Full Speed

The payload itself is straightforward but significant. The 24 satellites will join SpaceX's already massive broadband constellation, which Spaceflight Now reported now includes more than 10,800 spacecraft in low Earth orbit. This launch represents the 69th batch of Starlink V2 Mini Optimized satellites launched in 2026 alone.

SpaceX continues to launch from both its Florida and California pads at a blistering pace. This mission will be the 90th Falcon rocket launch of the year globally — including one Falcon Heavy — underscoring just how central Vandenberg has become to the company's overall launch cadence.
