SpaceX Falcon 9 Successfully Launches Starlink Group 17-14
Recap of the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. Mission successful.
SpaceX successfully launched another batch of Starlink satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base Wednesday evening, continuing the company's ambitious mission to provide global internet coverage from space. The Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket lifted off from Space Launch Complex 4E at 7:42 PM PDT, carrying 24 satellites destined for low Earth orbit as part of the Starlink Group 17-14 mission.
Central Coast residents were treated to spectacular views as the rocket's nine Merlin engines ignited, creating a brilliant column of light against the twilight sky. The first stage performed flawlessly during its two-and-a-half-minute burn before separating from the upper stage approximately 75 kilometers above Earth. Following a picture-perfect trajectory, the booster executed its planned landing sequence, touching down on the autonomous drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You" stationed in the Pacific Ocean roughly eight minutes after liftoff.
Meanwhile, the second stage continued its journey, deploying all 24 Starlink satellites into their intended orbit approximately 15 minutes after launch. These flat-panel satellites will join thousands of others already in SpaceX's growing constellation, designed to beam high-speed internet service to users worldwide, particularly in underserved rural and remote areas where traditional broadband infrastructure remains limited or nonexistent.
This mission marks another milestone in SpaceX's rapid launch cadence from the West Coast facility. The company has transformed Vandenberg into a crucial hub for polar and sun-synchronous orbit missions, with Starlink launches becoming increasingly routine occurrences that light up California's coastal skies.
Each successful Starlink deployment brings SpaceX closer to its goal of operating a mega-constellation of over 40,000 satellites. The service already provides internet access to customers across six continents, with particular success in connecting remote communities and providing emergency communications during natural disasters.
Wednesday's flawless mission demonstrates the reliability SpaceX has achieved with its reusable rocket technology. The Falcon 9 first stage used in this flight had previously completed multiple missions, showcasing the cost-effectiveness that has revolutionized the commercial space industry.
Space enthusiasts eager to witness the next spectacular launch from Vandenberg won't have to wait long. SpaceX has another Falcon 9 mission scheduled for early May, promising more opportunities to see rocket science in action along California's scenic Central Coast.
