Their taproom on North Del Norte Boulevard pours some of the most interesting wild and sour ales in Ventura County, and the darker, funkier pours in their rotating lineup shine once the temperature drops. I like arriving around opening on a Sunday afternoon — you'll get a seat at the bar and the staff has time to walk you through what's in the foeder. Grab a flight; the sour program here is genuinely the real deal.

Game Day Starts at Monarca's

If you're hosting (or tailgating) this football season, Monarca's Meat Market on North Ventura Road is where you want to be the Friday or Saturday before. Get there early on game weekends — the good marinated cuts go fast, and the line builds by mid-morning.

The Oxnard Performing Arts & Convention Center on Hobson Way really comes alive in autumn — it's the season when the concert and theater calendar fills out and the community events (including fall festivals and Día de los Muertos programming) take over the campus. Check their schedule before you plan your weekend; parking on site is easy and free, which is reason enough to skip driving to LA for a show.

There's a particular pleasure in a movie theater when the marine layer rolls in. Plaza Stadium Cinemas 14 in downtown Oxnard is my pick for date night — 14 screens, stadium seating, and it's usually far less crowded than the RiverPark theater on opening weekends. If you want the big-format experience for a blockbuster, though, Century RiverPark 16's XD auditorium on Seaglass Way is worth the drive, and you can make an evening of it with dinner in the Town Center area afterward.

Panteón Fest brings Day of the Dead celebrations to Oxnard in mid-October, and building an ofrenda is one of the season's most meaningful traditions. Party City on West Esplanade Drive is my stop for candles, decorations, and costumes — go two weeks ahead of the holiday for the best selection, because the Día de los Muertos and Halloween shelves get picked over fast. It's also a solid one-stop shop if you've got kids with Halloween costume deadlines.

The Albert H. Soliz Library in El Rio is a smaller neighborhood alternative if you're on the north side of town.

Fall in Oxnard also means hosting season.
